TUFS Students Translate Buying Mittens by Niimi Nankichi into Arabic

September 13, 2022

TUFS student Saharu Nakayama (3rd year Arabic, School of Language and Culture) and TUFS specially-appointed lecturer Hussein Khaldoun (Arabic foreign language teacher) have co-translated an Arabic edition of Buying Mittens by Niimi Nankichi. On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, the two visited TUFS President Kayoko Hayashi to present her with a copy of the translation.

Ms. Nakayama commented: I am very happy to be a part of this project. When I was approached about doing a translation, I decided to participate because the first book translated by a TUFS student had been a Niimi Nankichi book, and so I chose Buying Mittens by the same author. I thought it would be a perfect book to translate because it contains lessons that transcend national boundaries, is beautifully illustrated, and has heartwarming content to deliver to the Arab world. After the translation was completed, lecturer Khaldoun proofread the translation and helped me find more natural wording that would take into account the differences in detailed expressions and nuances of language. It was a very valuable experience, as I gained new insights and knowledge about the Arabic language and the art of translation. It took a long time, but I would like to express my gratitude to the translation team for making it possible for us to publish the book. I would like to continue to devote myself to translation work.
