TUFS Student Places 2nd in English Speech Competition

July 27, 2017

On Sunday 9 th July, TUFS student So Kimura (School of Language and Culture Studies, Malaysian Department, 3 rd year) won second place at the 37th J.U.E.L Intercollegiate English Speech Competition (sponsored by Kanto Universities' E.S.S League). Kimura gave a speech titled 'Embrace What Makes Us Different.'

This competition is a national competition that decides the best student speakers in Japan, so the best five speakers from both the eastern and western Japan competitions also competed.

Kimura's Thoughts on Winning

In my speech I talked about my homestay experience in Malaysia, and the importance of understanding foreign cultures. After I entered TUFS and started learning about Malaysia, my major, there were many more chances to think about cultural differences. The fact that I was able to take the thoughts and realizations I've had throughout my university career, and present them in a speech, made this competition a very valuable experience. I am very grateful to my upperclassmen and friends who have supported me.
