On February 15th, Shinichiro Fukuoka, a sophomore English major at TUFS, was awarded first place at the 32nd Holeman Cup Extemporaneous English Speech Contest, hosted by the International Society of Hitotsubashi and Sponsored by the Tokyo Shimbun.

At the contest, participants gave an impromptu speech about a given topic. Twenty contestants from thirteen universities took part in the contest.

In the final match, six participants who successfully passed the preliminary matches showcased their creative speeches about the topic, "Happiness is what we grab for ourselves". Making reference to a novel by Charles Dickens, in which the protagonist comes from the lower classes, Fukuoka said in his winning speech that "the poor need support and help from others in order to seize happiness."
