This lecture introduces students to the spectrum of definitions and descriptions of peace-building, ranging from its commonsense understanding as the creation of mutual trust to its crucial role in conflict transformation which addresses the root causes of such violence. The main obstacles to meaningful peace-building such as “elite capture”, the lack of a transparent process, and/or the inability to address root causes and key consequences will be discussed.
