About Us

Responding to multilingualization and multiculturalization in the country, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies established the “Multicultural Community Learning Support Center” in October 2004, which supports the volunteer activities of students to apply what they have learnt at the University. Activities such as educational support and training in international understanding for non-Japanese children in Japan, carried out in partnership with regional societies, the Board of Education, elementary and junior high schools, have been very successful, and regional municipalities have also started to request support from the organization. With this, the “Center for Multilingual Multicultural Education and Research” was founded in 2006 to conduct multilingual/ multicultural activities within Japanese society to contribute to society, research, and the University’s fundamental mission of education.

However, intercultural community cannot be realized through efforts made within Japan alone. So, to fully utilize the University’s strengths as an educational and research hub for the global knowledge, developing globally with a perspective that takes in the whole world, we integrated the University’s intercultural undertakings, and reorganized them as the “Center for Intercultural Studies.”
