Execution of research and on-site training of graduate students on the Document Collection of the Minato Tax Office (Jubunsho) held by the Hishida Family of Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture.
The work has been published as a document collection. Organizing the Chinese Document Research Groups into a Single Organization Project Manager: Sachiko USUI
From June 2003, USUI has started a research circle focusing on documents from the Ming and Qing Dynasty periods in China. This has attracted the participation of young researchers from outside the TUFS as well as inside. The organization works on preservation and decipherment projects. The research meeting is held at the Hongo Satellite Campus. The research organization works very closely with the Indigenous Documents Group in pursuing its research activities.

• a. Digitalization and cataloguing of 'Documents of the office of the Manchu Amban stationed in Khuree (Fond M1) ' held by the National Central Archives of Mongolia.
Approximately 1,350 photos of documents are shared with the Mongolian collaborators in the form of CDRs. Cataloguing of digitalized content in 2005 (approximately 2,000 photos, recorded on five CDRs.) b. Landscapes Reflected in Old Mongolian Maps, edited by Futaki Hiroshi and Kamimura Akira, published in 2005, has been registered under 'Old Mongolian Maps' in the digital library, Dilins, and published. For details, see: http://mongol.tufs.ac.jp/landmaps/ Cambodia Project (Project Manager: Kozue TERAUCHI) Three types of hand-written documents have been miclofilmed in collaboration with National Archives of Cambodia. The microfilming of Collection of Cambodian Customary Law and Minutes of Council of Ministers (1897 1937) was concluded by the end of the 2005 academic year. The third and final documents scheduled to be microfilmed this academic year were the "Minutes of the National Assembly 1947-1948." However, damage to the documents was found to be very severe and those microfilming had to be abandoned for technical reasons.
Burma (Myanmar) Project (Project Managers: Teruko SAITO and Thu NANDAR)
a. Documents in the Shan language
Of all the available vernacular documents in the Shan region of Burma, microfilming of scrolls and folded documents on the Shan customary law, the Wheel of Truth (Dhamma-sekya), and the regional history of Shan has been completed on four reels of microfilm. b. Palm Leaf Manuscripts and Para-baiks of the U Bo Thee Monastery Library Of the palm leaf manuscripts and Para-baiks held at the Monastery Library built and funded by U Bo Thee, 'History', 'Buddhist sutras', 'Customary Law', and 'Palace Drama' were selected and microfilmed on three rolls of microfilm. c. Rare documents collection held by Dr. Hla Pe Rare documents, Para-baiks, and ink print images of stone tablets collected by Dr. Hla Pe were photographed on 11 rolls of microfilm and then digitalized. d. A collection of Para-baiks of the Konbaung period, a total of 814 tiles, was registered with the digital library, Dilins, and published. Vietnam Project (Project Manager: SHINE Toshihiko) The 'Panduranga-Champa royal archives owned by Sociêtê Asiatique in Paris, France consists of two types of copied documents: Han Nom (Sino-Vietnamese) version and Akhar Thrah (Malay-Cham) version. The COE, in collaboration with the French School of Asian Studies (École Française d'Extrême-Orient) executed 'The Digitalization and Cataloguing of the Champa Royal Archives Project.'
a. Digitalization of the Sino-Vietnamese version By October 2006, 800 pages of Sino-Vietnamese version have been digitized into 491 images in JPEG format. b. Cataloguing of the Sino-Vietnamese version The cataloguing of the 'Sino-Vietnamese version of the Champa R0yal Archives,' which are divided into 94 files (approximately 800 pages), was commenced in 1984 by the Sorbonne University Indochina Peninsula History Culture Center (CHCPI). However, we discovered many errors and oversights, hence we made overall revision of the catalogue. c. Digitalization of Malay-Cham version of the Champa royal archives 1,872 pages of Cham manuscripts were recorded on thirteen CD-ROMs in JPEG format. Activities up to 2005 January 14-15, 2006 The International Symposium on Preservation of Myanmar Traditional Manuscripts was held in Yangon, Myanmar (Co-Sponsored with the Myanmar Ministry of Religion) Venue: International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University (Yangon) Focusing on 18th and 19th Century Para-baiks and palm leaf manuscripts, thirteen presentations on the collection, preservation, and historical research based on documents were given by librarians, archivists, and researchers from five countries: Myanmar, Japan, the United States, the UK, and France. The contents of this symposium are recorded in the C-DATS publication, Enriching the Past: Preservation, Conservation and Study on Myanmar Traditional Manuscripts .
August 25-26, 2005 An International Symposium on "Multinational Comparison of Historical Archives - Historical Documents in East Asia and Families, Commerce, and Society -" was held in Shanghai (Co-sponsored by Fudan University and National Institutes for the Humanities National Institute of Japanese Literature Archives) Venue: Baolong Hotel, Shanghai
Presentations were given on Ming-Qing period and modern history in China and the Middle Ages and modern history in Japan by researchers who utilize historical documents. Details of the symposium and the individual presentations are published in the March 2006 issue of "Journal of Centre for Documentation and Area-Transcultural Studies", Issue 7 (pp 7 -150).

In Palembang, situated in the southern part of Sumatra Island, a research and cataloguing project on manuscripts started with the participation of researchers from the Nusantara Manuscript Foundation (Yayasan Naskah Nusantara), the Nusantara Manuscript Society (Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara), Jakarta and Palembang Branch, and the National Islam University. In the western part of Sumatra (Minangkabau area) research on manuscripts is also under progress with the effort being spearheaded by researchers of the Andalas University.

Microfilming and digitalization of Para-baiks and palm leaf manuscripts commenced Project Manager: Teruko SAITO
"An Agreement Pertaining to the Historical Documents Preservation Project" was signed between TUFS and Universities Historical Research Centre (a national collaborative institute based within the Yangon Campus). Currently, the microfilming and cataloguing of mainly legal contracts from the 18th to 19th Centuries is under way.

Through collaboration with the library of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, a project is under way to share Huizhou Documents. The scope of collaboration is scheduled to expand to relevant institution and researchers in Huizhou China during this academic year.
